Burton sits a straight run south-west from Derby on the A38. Industrial work is as likely as a house call here, more so than anywhere else we cover. The brewing trade left production buildings, warehouses and light industrial units dotted among Victorian terraces, inter-war semis and new estates at Stretton, Branston and Winshill.

Ross spent years building and commissioning food-handling control systems on production lines and panels worldwide. That's useful in a town built on process plant. Reading a panel schedule or fixing a control fault doesn't change much whether the product is beer or something else entirely.

Burton's housing spans a lot of ground. Terraces near the centre are late Victorian, solid-walled, often with cellars, and usually carry decades of patched-up wiring. Horninglow, Winshill and Stapenhill add inter-war and post-war stock. Stretton and Branston bring newer estate homes, where the ask is normally EV charging, security or heating control.

The industrial side is what sets Burton apart from most of our patch.
